Karma Yoga Classes: Help Establish a Health Clinic in Kenya

As part of her post-secondary studies in health sciences, Laurie will be travelling to Africa for several months with her mentor, fellow Bikram Yoga practitioner Dr. Keith Powell, to work with orphaned children (many of whom have lost both parents to HIV/AIDS) and help better educate women there about health.

“My goal is to follow the initiatives of the World Health Organization and the United Nations Millennium Development Goals to educate women about health care, HIV/AIDS, pre-natal health and disease,” she says. “Research shows that when you empower a women about health care all other areas of community, society and family improve.”

The Karma Yoga Classes will be held on December 3, 2 p.m. at the Cambie Studio and on December 18, 12:45 p.m. at the Kitsilano Studio. Both classes are by donation, with all money raised going to help Laurie and Keith purchase medical supplies, testing kits and infrastructure for the clinic.

“After travelling to different parts of the world, I have come to realize that North Americans are very lucky to have education and services easily available at our fingertips,” Laurie says. “My goal is to learn about the people in the village and inspire them to be creative in combating the problems they are faced with daily.”
