Bikram BFFs: Sonya & Amber (Contest)

Bikram Yoga BFFs

On days when you need a little extra help getting to the hot room, a buddy can be the best motivation. Best friends Amber and Sonya have been practising Bikram Yoga together for years; find out what they admire most about each other’s practise, and let us know how your Bikram Buddy motivates you for a chance to win!

When did you two meet? Was it “like at first sight”?

Amber

We met at UBC but it wasn’t until our sorority sent us down to California for a convention that we realized how similar we were. We got into a lot of trouble together and had a special bond after that!

Sonya

It was definitely “like at first sight.” We have been friends since university and are a great balance to each other’s personalities.

When did you start practising Bikram Yoga, and why?

Amber

There was a group of us that had wanted to try Bikram Yoga for a while. We thought it would be a fun workout. We didn’t even realize the benefits to mental health, as well!

Sonya

We started practising at the same time, about five years ago. I’d always been interested in trying a “more intense” type of yoga and found that Bikram was really enjoyable and a great way to stay in shape.

Bikram Yoga BudsHow does having a “Bikram Buddy” help you in your practice?

Sonya

When I am feeling super lazy and all I want to do is stay in bed and watch TV, Amber’s the one who motivates me to go to class!

Amber

We plan to go to class and carpool together, as well as motivate each other by saying, “I’m heading to yoga at 7:45 – wanna come?” How could one say no? It’s more fun having company in class, too.

What do you admire most about each other’s practice?

Amber

If she’s too hot or uncomfortable, Sonya makes these funny faces in the mirror that make me laugh. Plus, she goes to class all the time. Seeing her determination is the best motivation for me.

Sonya

Amber has amazing focus and concentration. I really admire her presence and mindfulness when she’s doing the postures, where I tend to get distracted more easily. It’s very inspiring to watch her practise.

When you’re not sweating in the hot room, you’re …

Sonya & Amber

Hanging out with friends and laughing as much as possible!

    My mom

  3. Mai Vo says:

My ultimate Bikram buddy would be my grandma. She’s always been my inspiration growing up and still has to this present day. Last year she was able to run 21 laps around a standard track without stopping, and during the summer of 2012, I took her to Grouse Mountain for the first time. She climbed at a nice and steady pace, without stopping, and it took her less than an hour an half. The only thing that has made me hesitant to bring her to one of Bikram yoga classes is the language barrier…she’s not quite fluent in English..and I’m a little afraid that she’ll be lost in the hot room. But, we’ll see! She is turning 70 this year, maybe I’ll give her a walk through of the poses beforehand and take her in one day 🙂

  4. Karen says:

My coworker – we make sure the other does our workouts everyday!

  5. Megan says:

I’d love to do yoga with my boyfriend more often. He’s the reason I have a “bikram life” and his dedication and focus in every posture keeps me driven to push myself. In the classes we’ve had together, I love being able to look beside me when I’m struggling and see his smiling face silently encouraging me!

  6. Xing says:

I would say Obama. He’s a very cool down-to-earth kind of guy. He’s busy for sure but no one should be too busy for bikram!

    • Trevor says:

I think the Obamas would feel right at home in the hot room. After all that politicking they could use some time to just meditate and focus!

  7. Aaron says:

I think Madonna would be a great. She’s driven, strong, athletic….I would just have to make her come to the studio with me… 😀

  8. Areta says:

My ultimate bikram buddy would be Oprah. I could talk to her about anything and she could give me some insight on life, love and everything in between.

  9. Michelle says:

My ultimate yoga buddy is my husband, Mike! We only practice together on occasion (once a week if we’re lucky! Have to arrange for a babysitter *smile*).
With a new addition to our family & life’s hustle & bustle, the hot room is our ideal place to re-connect and share our energy. The strength & the mental clarity we get after class is a great reminder that whatever comes our way, we can conquer anything together.
…also, it’s always fun to get in a few sneak peeks of my hubby topless without interruption 😉

    • Trevor says:

Hehe… It’s always wonderful to hear about couples that reconnect in the hot room! Great excuse to get out of the house!

  10. I think Michelle Obama would be such an awesome Bikram’s Buddy. She’s so strong and motivated that it would be impossible not to want to work super hard next to her!

Pluuuuus I bet she could do one heck of a standing-forehead-to-knee. Phew!

    • Trevor says:

We agree, Kimberly! Something tells us that both of the Obamas could rock it in the hot room. Must be nice to have leaders that encourage healthy living, and you actually trust that they practice what they preach.

  11. I think Michelle Obama would be the best Bikram’s partner! She’s so strong and motivated and would push me to be better! Plus I bet that lady can do a mean standing forehead to knee.

  12. lisa says:

I’d love to do yoga with Russell Brand! OR if I could do a yoga POSSE it’d involve all the people I did yoga teacher training with – it’s been two years since we’ve all been together – that would be amazing!

  13. Anna says:

I’d love to have my boyfriend as my Bikram buddy! He’s tried it only once before but he remains very dedicated to his gym regimen so I think it would be an amazing motivation and bonding experience to share the hot room with him on a regular basis 🙂

  14. Claire says:

My ultimate bikram buddy would be my one and only father!!

His health is not in perfect condition and I know this yoga would be so beneficial to him. I try with a gentle push but he still isnt sold yet. Nothing would make me happier then to have him in that hot room with me!

    • Trevor says:

It can be a frightening thing to start, but it’s really worth it to keep trying. It’s pretty amazing to get our parents into the hot room with us!

  15. Kat says:

My friend Moe, she took me to my first yoga class ever; I still think of her every time I go in there.

  16. Brenda says:

My ultimate yoga buddy would be my husband. He has yet to try bikrams but it would be amazing to share it with him. I’m going to keep working on him. My other bikram yoga buddy is my 7 year old son. On the few occassions we practiced together, I enjoyed having someone I love so much beside me sharing the yoga with.

  17. Leonie says:

My husband as we laugh about each other’s lack of flexibility together! Maybe one day we’ll be bendy!

  18. Hilary says:

Best Buddy would be future me, granted I stick with the practice! This would serve as a comparison and learning opportunity from someone who knows my body. I could also see how well my knees hold out!

  19. Nicole says:

    http://www.iphoneogram.com/u/218143342

I follow this guy on Instagram – it would be cool to have him as my Bikram BFF.

  20. Marlene says:

Definately, my best friend Stephanie :). We’be been best friends for almost 6 years! My family and I have been going through tough times, and with the stress with going to school and working multiple jobs, Stephanie’s family has been generous in treating me like family and helping me and my family with things when needed. I’m a lucky person!

  21. Laurie says:

Kara Lang!!! We have a lot in common, especially terrible soccer-player-knees! 😛

  22. Donald says:

My ultimate yoga buddy would have to be my girlfriend. She simply motivates me to go practice yoga and gets my butt out of the house 😀

    • Trevor says:

Heck yeah! Gotta love it when your partner gets you into the hot room and doesn’t encourage you to just sit on the couch!

  23. Lyndsey says:

    Lady Gaga 😉

  24. Jeremy says:

My ultimate buddy would definitely bikram himself

  25. Jenny says:

Jillian Michaels – she would work hard and would push me to my highest potential! I’d also love Lady Gaga, she’s my pop idol and she LOVES Bikram.

  26. Sydney says:

My ultimate buddy would be the hot yoga master himself… Bikram!

  27. Trevor says:

Don’t think it’s possible to pick just one, so I’m going to have a yoga POSSE consisting of Dolly Parton, John Steinbeck and Goldie Hawn! Haha… Wouldn’t that crew be a site to see.
